Legal Background
Val Whitley has been a solo attorney practitioner since 1995 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has been practicing law in New Mexico since 1989. He initially put in a very tough but good 6 years as a trial attorney with the State Public Defender in Santa Fe where he did primarily serious felony crimes (including Homicide and Rape cases) for over 5 of those years. After leaving the Public Defender, he continued to do contract work for the Public Defender in all types of felonies as well as capital crimes (Homicide). He has handled and tried Homicide cases in the First Judicial District (Santa Fe, Rio Arriba counties) as well as in Taos, Albuquerque and Farmington. Mr. Whitley has also done work in some Tribal Courts in the state.

He no longer handles contract work with the State Public Defender but he is on the Criminal Justice Act Panel (CJA) for the Federal District Court District of New Mexico. This panel of attorneys are appointed by the Federal Court to handle indigent clients before the Court. Mr. Whitley has been a member of the “A” panel for over 15 years. The "A" panel that handles most felonies. Mr. Whitley is also available to handle private federal criminal cases as well.

Personal Background
Although not a native speaker of Spanish, he has become fluent. He has been learning, speaking and working in Spanish since 1977. He has a degree in Spanish but most importantly has studied language in Mexico, has worked as an archeologist and project interpreter for projects in Mexico and Belize, and lived in Mexico for three years running a small business and studying spanish.

Mr. Whitley has handled hundreds if not thousands of cases involving Spanish speaking clients for over 27 years of practice in New Mexico. He has been honored to work with these immigrant clients as well as participating in many Somos Un Pueblo activities as a member. (a wonderful Immigrant Rights Group)

Our office consists of one attorney and one paralegal, using private investigators when necessary. We pride ourselves on being accessible to our clients and their families and run a fully automated office. We're conveniently located in downtown Santa Fe with ample parking within two blocks of the First Judicial District Court in Santa Fe.

Abby Flores is the office paralegal. Abby has been working with Val Whitley Law since 2008. Prior to that she worked at the State Public Defenders for 2 years, The Jones Law Firm and with Stephen Aarons and P. Jeffery Jones. Abby is a native Spanish speaker, and she communicates well with all of our clients, the courts and law enforcement. She is super competent, friendly and compassionate to our clients and their families.
